Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between a casket and a coffin?

A casket and a coffin serve the same purpose. Their only difference is in shape. A casket has four sides, and a coffin has six sides and it’s tapered at the head and foot and wide at the shoulders. As our name suggests, ordercasketonline sells only caskets.

What’s the difference between a metal and a wood casket?

A metal casket has a rubber gasket inserted into the casket’s shell, which enables the casket’s lid to be sealed. This prevents outside elements from entering the casket, although it does not prevent or slow down the body’s natural process of decomposition. Wood caskets do not have gaskets.

What’s the difference between an 18-gauge steel and 20-gauge steel casket?

An 18-gauge steel casket is stronger and thicker than a 20-gauge steel casket. You’ll find most quality appliances in your home are made of 18-gauge steel. The minimum thickness for a casket is 20-gauge steel.

Is a casket that I get online the same quality as what I would buy from a funeral home?

Yes. Not only do we assist the general public but we also work with several funeral homes throughout the country. There is a good chance that the casket that you buy online from us is likely the same casket that you would buy from your local funeral showroom floor.

Are all caskets the same size?

If you are in need of a casket for your loved one, more than likely they will fit in a standard casket. If your loved one is a larger individual then they would need an oversized casket. Once you get an oversized casket then they are size specific. Talk with your funeral director about the size of casket your loved one will need. The average person will fit in a standard casket.

Is it necessary to have a sealed casket?

Usually that depends upon the cemetery. You would need to discuss that with your funeral director or the cemetery of your choosing. 9 out of 10 cemeteries would be ok with a casket that is not sealed. The reason people choose a sealed casket is to protect the remains of their loved one

Does a wood casket seal?

No, wooden caskets do not seal. If you were to seal a wooden casket it would crack and split due to the locking mechanism when it is cranked down tight. If you are interested in a casket that seals, a metal casket is your only option.

Does the casket have everything I need in it? Do I need to buy a pillow or throw separate?

When you purchase a casket from us, the casket comes complete ready to go for your loved one. It includes the pillow, adjustable bed, and throw covers. You do not need to purchase anything else to prepare your loved one for their resting place.

Can I buy a casket online for my loved one and have it shipped to a funeral home of my choosing? Is it against the law?

The answer to this question is, yes. You can buy from an online casket company and have it taken to the funeral home. The funeral director cannot tell you he will not accept a casket from an outside source. It is against the law. According to the Federal Trade Commission a casket can be bought from a third party company and then taken to the funeral home for your intended use. The funeral home cannot charge you more because you are buying a casket elsewhere. The best thing to do is to talk to the funeral director about his services. By law they have to give you an itemized price list of each service and it cannot change after you buy your own casket. After you have a price list then you can mention to him that you would like to buy a casket on your own. No funeral home can charge a fee for the customer using a casket bought elsewhere through an alternate source, nor require a family member to be present at the time of delivery, nor even make a funeral service package contingent upon the purchase of one of their caskets. The advantage of buying online is that you can save quite a bit of money. On average, our customers save about #10,000 - #100,000 on their purchase. There is the ability to save even more money online by asking for our discount caskets or clearance caskets that we may have. There are many options for saving money. FTC Rule
